Dancing Troubles Away- Not!

Sally Makie

CWAC

I was posted to Military Hospital at Camp Ipperwash, Ontario, and took charge of the hospital kitchen. I received my corporal stripes in 1945.

I was just a week in the CWAC and had just gotten my uniform. It was a Saturday night and two other girls from Barracks invited me to join them as they were going to a dance. I felt this would be very nice, so I accepted and off I went to town with them.

After we had walked around town a bit, they chose a popular dance hall. We went upstairs, checked our coats, and walked over the edge of the dance floor. As I was watching the dancers, and airman invited me to dance. I accepted and had only danced a few steps when I felt someone tapping me on the shoulder. Turning around I could not believe my eyes. Standing there waiting to talk to me were two CWAC Provosts!!

I stopped dancing and they immediately said "Don't you know this dance hall is out of bounds for Army personnel?" I replied that I was not aware of this. They next inquired why I had not read the rules, which would be posted on our bulletin board. I then let them know I had only been in the service about a week, and I didn't realize there even WAS a bulletin board I should be checking.

While I stood there feeling very embarrassed and wondering what would happen to me now, they told me they wouldn't do anything to me this time, but before I ever left Barracks again I must check our bulletin board for rules, regulations and new notices. I thanked them and said I would.

Boy oh boy -at that moment I certainly knew I was no longer just a civilian!!!
