I joined the CWAC in December 1942 in Halifax, N.S. at M.D.6. In February 1943, I was sent to Kitchener, Ontario for basic training. When that was over, I was returned to Halifax and promoted to Corporal. In the winter of 1944 I went to Aldershot, NS where I took an overseas course, which included the handling and firing of rifles and Bren guns.
The highlight of my army career was to be on the Overseas Draft, but leading up to this was the overseas course I was on at Aldershot N.S. As stated before, we had to learn to handle and shoot rifles and Bren guns. They didn't divulge how well we had done until the end of the course. At the closing ceremony, the Officers and N.C.O Instructors had contributed to a collection of over $100.00 to be awarded to the top shooter. When my name was called, I just about fell over. I could not believe it! Everyone loves winning, but the reason I felt so good was because they had phoned my parents to be there. My father was a Sportsman with many trophies. He was also well known for his proficiency in shooting. My father was so proud that I had won, and I was happy to excel in the sport he loved most.
