My Military Wedding

Kay Monkman

CWAC

I went through basic training at Vermillion, Alberta. I was in one of the first contingent that went to Vermillion, Alberta for Basic. They had not even completed the changes to make the college into a Military Barracks.

I was first posted to Fort Osborne Barracks where we were documented and screened for postings. My second posting was to Brandon Manitoba to A4 Canadian Artillery Centre (CATC) where I worked in the QM Stores, where I remained until I was discharged.

My wedding was on Jan 1, 1944. Earnie and I chose to have a Military wedding in the chapel at the Canadian Artillery Training Centre, Brandon, Manitoba. Our invitations went out to all camp personnel that we thought would like to attend It wasn't intentional, but somehow we overlooked Major McNaka, the O.C. of the Artillerymen. Major McNaka was a great cheerful character. During our wedding service in comes our Major McNaka, noisy as a Parade Square Sergeant Major. Earnie and I turned and looked at the Major, and then at each other. Oh no! Suddenly we had both realized we had somehow missed sending him an invitation!!

The rest of the wedding and reception went off very well, and was enjoyed by all, including our Major McNaka who was the life of the party.
