One day in barracks in Victoria, I had a back molar starting to ache. It became quite severe very quickly so I reported to sick Bay. I was sent right away to the Dentist. He wasted no time sitting me down in the dentist chair. I didn't see him pick up anything to freeze my tooth, so when he told me to open my mouth I thought he was just going to examine the tooth. Suddenly there was a tug and the tooth was out. I couldn't believe any tooth could come out that fast!
Now any tooth coming out that fast should have been easy, but instead my face was swollen and I was black and blue, and even yellow. In a word I was a mess and looked it. Going back and forth to the Artillery Canteen I had to pass the military post office on my way to work. The fellows in the post office used to watch for me to pass. They took great delight in teasing me. If I looked THIS bad, they said, what did the poor soldier look like?
One of the fellows that teased me more than the others became my husband six months later!!
