I took a course at Toronto, Ontario: NMCS Conestoga, trained for "Top Secret & Censorship" classified as Special duties. I was posted to HMCS Stadacona in Halifax then to HMCS Givenchy in Victoria then on to HMCS Griffon, in Port Arthur Ontario till the end of the war.
One of my outstanding experiences occurred in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We lived in a large building housing several hundred Wrens. We had a very ambitious Wren Officer, who had problems with discipline. One evening she took a pair of sharp shears and stood by the regulating desk. Some girls coming in after being out for the evening, their hair hanging over their collars, the damp air took the curl out and it drooped. Our Mam would grab their hair and cut it off. After much crying and wailing, the word went out to the MP's at the entrance gate, to warn the girls to tuck their hair under their hats- Mam is barbering tonight! Well, that didn't work. Mam took their hats off and if the hair fell over the collar- off it went with the shears.
The next morning she was reported to the Commanding Officer. We heard she was severely reprimanded for her conduct and shipped off to the most dreaded posting... far off ...Newfie!
