After joining the Wrens, Della worked in the Fleet Mail Office. Her first posting was in Halifax where she worked in the mailroom at the Naval Hospital. She was then posted to HMCS Avalon in St. Johns NFLD where she worked redirecting mail. Seeing the multitudes of parcels that had been so lovingly packed in Canadian homes, and which had not survived the journey through the postal system, was heart wrenching for her. Navy sailors changed addresses many times and unless the parcel was wrapped in extra strong wrapping, it would arrive in pieces or else be a soggy mass from the cookies etc. contained within.
Everyone involved at the Mail Office could not help thinking of the folks at home whose hands had so lovingly wrapped these gifts to their sons, daughters, and other family members. They did their best at salvaging the parcels, but it caused incredible sadness amongst the Wrens at seeing the destroyed parcels that would never reach their destination.
